National League West Odds & Predictions

by Reno Gold on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

National League West Odds & Predictions: The upstart San Diego Padres continue to lead the National League West, in part because they're the best road team in the National League. And they're on the road this week, first stopping in Atlanta and then moving on to Pittsburgh for three games with the Pirates starting Friday. Here's a quick look at the Padres, their prospects, and what others in their division are up to this weekend.

Three teams are chasing San Diego in the West heading into the stretch drive. The San Francisco Giants will stop in Arizona for four games with the disappointing Diamondbacks starting Thursday. The Colorado Rockies, who lost three of their first five games coming out of the All-Star break, visit Philadelphia for a three-game set with the struggling Phillies starting Friday. And the Los Angeles Dodgers, recent losers of six games in a row, host the New York Mets for four games beginning Thursday.

The Padres went off this season getting +2,000 odds at Sportsbook.com to win the NL West, +5,000 odds to win the National League pennant, and +10,000 odds to win the World Series. By this week, though, the Padres had been bet down to -120 to win the NL West, +700 to win the pennant, and +1800 to win the World Series.

San Diego has also been the best team in the big leagues to wager on this season, topping Sportsbook.com's ML money chart at +$1,950 (based on +100 wagers on each game).

The Padres went into the All-Star Break having lost four of their previous six games, but they won three of their first four games coming out of the break to regain their balance in the standings. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is in the NL Central basement, but they're at least hovering around the .500 mark at home at PNC Park this season.

Sportsbook.com is also offering Colorado and San Francisco at +150 to win the NL West, with the Dodgers getting +500; the Giants are listed at +500, Rockies +600 and L.A. at +1,000 to win the National League; and the Rockies and San Francisco are getting +1,500, the Dodgers +2,000 to win the World Series.

In other Senior Circuit action this weekend, the NL-East-leading Atlanta Braves visit the pesky Florida Marlins; the NL-Central-leading St. Louis Cardinals drop in on Wrigleyville for three games with the Cubs; and the Cincinnati Reds, who are battling with the Cardinals for top spot in their division, hit Houston for three games with the Astros.

Sportsbook.com is still taking action on all the Major League divisional races, as well as the American League and National League Wild Card races.
