National League West rivals Los Angeles and San Francisco will battle it out for the division lead this afternoon as they close out a three game set at AT&T Park. Today’s game between the two familiar foes is scheduled to get underway at 4:05pm ET. The latest MLB Point Spreads have the visiting Dodgers listed as a slight -110 moneyline favorite while the Giants are drawing +110 odds to avoid a sweep. The game total is set at six runs; the Over is favored at -125 odds.
The Giants have been a red hot second half team, until Los Angeles rolled into town on Friday night that is. San Francisco fell to the Dodgers 5-3 in the series opener and it was spanked 10-0 yesterday in route to a third consecutive loss. The Giants slide has jeopardized their division lead as they sit just one game ahead of L.A. heading into today’s series finale.
San Francisco will look to the always reliable Ryan Vogelsong to stop the bleeding and keep it out of a first place tie with the Dodgers. Vogelsong brings a 8-4 record and 2.26 ERA (18 starts) to the hill this afternoon. He recorded his 15th consecutive quality start on Monday, limiting the Padres to four hits and one earned run over seven innings in a 7-1 Giants victory. Today will mark his third appearance of the season against L.A.; he is 2-0 against the Dodgers, having held them to just one earned run over 14 innings.
The Dodgers, now 55-47 overall, will look to reclaim a share of the division lead with Cy Young winner Clayton Kershaw toeing the rubber. Kershaw is having another tremendous season, but his ERA ballooned from 2.74 to 3.14 after his last outing, 2-8 loss at St. Louis. The Cardinals pounded seven hits and eight earned runs off of Kershaw over just 5.2 innings as he turned in his worst performance of the season.
Kershaw’s career numbers against the Giants would suggest he is in for a bounce back outing this afternoon. In 14 appearances (13 starts) opposite San Francisco Kershaw is 6-3 with a 1.45 ERA; however, he is 0-2 against the Giants this season, despite allowing just four earned runs over 14 innings.
MLB Point Spreads Betting Trend: The Giants are 8-2 in Vogelsong’s last 10 starts when opposed by a left handed pitcher.
