The red hot Oakland A’s welcome the Tampa Bay Rays to the Bay Area tonight as the two squads open up a three game set at the O.co Coliseum. This evening’s contest is scheduled for a 10:05pm ET start. The latest MLB Point Spreads have the visiting Rays listed as a slight -116 moneyline favorite; the Over 6.5 runs is favored at -115 odds. Oakland is drawing +106 odds to win its sixth straight home game.
The Rays did not start the season’s second half in stellar fashion, losing four of their first six post-All-Star break games, but they are on a 4-2 run coming into tonight’s series opener with Oakland. Tampa Bay, which opened its current nine game road swing with a 2-1 series win over the Orioles, took its series with the Angels yesterday, beating L.A. 2-0 in Zack Greinke’s Halo debut.
The Rays will look to keep the momentum from that series intact while getting a leg up on the A’s by sending staff ace David Price to the hill this evening. As Price’s 2.57 ERA and 14-4 record would indicate, he has been exceptional this season. Since late June, though, Price has almost been untouchable, allowing no more than two earned runs in each of his last six starts while striking out no fewer than seven batters in those appearances. Tampa Bay, not surprisingly, posted a 5-1 record during that stretch.
While the Rays have been hot of late, the Athletics have been smouldering since the Mid-Summer Classic. Oakland is 12-3 in its last 15 games and it went into the All-Star break on a 6-1 tear. And, despite losing 6-1 in yesterday’s finale with Baltimore, the Athletics won the three game set 2-1 to record their seventh straight non-losing series.
Oakland will look to recover form yesterday’s setback and overcome the dominating Price with rookie hurler A.J. Griffin toeing the rubber. Griffin has been outstanding since his call up in late June, posting a 3-0 record and 2.25 ERA in six starts. Griffin, who has worked exactly six innings in each of his six major league appearances, has allowed more than two earned runs in a game on just one occasion, but he still got the win in that outing after holding Minnesota to three runs on eight hits.
The Athletics are 5-1 in Griffin’s six outings and they are 3-0 in his three starts at O.co Coliseum.
MLB Point Spreads Betting Trend: The Athletics are 9-1 in their last 10 games as a home underdog in the month of July.
