MLB Picks: The Braves and Padres are ready to mix it up this evening at PETCO Park in San Diego, California. The two squads will begin a three game set as the Padres try to crawl out of the cellar in the NL West and the Braves try to stay in contention in the East. SBGglobal.com is favoring the visiting Braves at -112 on the moneyline in their MLB Picks: Braves vs Padres MLB Betting Odds – August 3, 2009.
The Braves enter their series with the Padres on a down note after losing two out of three at home to the Dodgers. They are 4-6 in their last 10 games, killing the momentum they created with a 6-1 stretch following the All-Star break. Atlanta has kept its head above water, though, and is 53-52 overall, trailing the Phillies by seven games in the division standings.
Kenshin Kawakami will attempt to get his fourth road victory of the season tonight as he is presently 3-4 away from Turner Field with a 5.70 ERA. Despite Kawakami's poor road numbers, the Braves have managed to win three of his last four starts at opposing venues. On the year, the Japanese right-hander is 5-8 in 19 starts with a 4.37 ERA.
The Padres are 43-63 entering tonight's contest, but they have been hot of late, winning five of their last six games. Surprisingly, the San Diego bats have discovered some pop in the team's mimi surge, leading to an average of 5.5 runs per game.
San Diego will counter Kawakami with rookie hurler Mat Latos. Latos is making his fourth start of the year for the big league club after being brought up from Double A on July 18th. The 21 year old righty has been excellent since his promotion, allowing just nine hits and five earned runs in 16.2 innings of work.
Tonight's game one clash is scheduled for a 10:05pm ET start at PETCO Park.
