Yankees, Rangers Battle For Wild Card In Texas. The New York Yankees four-game road trip to Texas could help clear up the murky picture that is the American League Wild Card . The Rangers need all the wins they can get as they try to leapfrog several teams in front of them. Sidney Ponson will face Tommy Hunter on Wednesday as Ponson faces the team that cut him earlier in the year. Ponson had an ERA of 3.88 in 55 innings pitched for the Rangers but they still released him because of his personality wore down teammates. Allegedly Ponson was a disruptive member in the clubhouse.

The Yankees picked up Ponson and he's been OK in five starts. He has two bad starts against the Rangers and the Boston Red Sox, where he's given up a combined 14 earned runs and three home runs in nine innings pitched. But in his other three starts, Ponson has limited the Los Angeles Angels, Minnesota Twins and Tampa Bay Rays to just four earned runs in 18.2 innings pitched (1.97 ERA) . Following Ponson's pitching, the Yankees have won his three good starts and lost his two bad one. 

Ponson's outing against his former team came on July 2nd. He allowed nine hits, seven earned runs and lasted just five innings. 

He'll faceoff with Tommy Hunter, who is making his second Major League start.

Hunter made it through five innings of work in his first start this past Friday, but he gave up eight hits, six earned runs, two home runs and two walks to the typically light hitting Toronto Blue Jays. The puts a black eye on his ERA, which currently sits at 10.80. 

The Rangers are in the midst of a crucial 11-game home stand and were 5-2 in their last seven after Tuesday's game.
