MLB Picks: The reeling Phillies will host the streaking Colorado Rockies tonight in game two of their three game set at Citizens Bank Park. Colorado jumped out to a 4-0 lead last night and eventually prevailed 8-3 to secure their fifth straight win. Sportsbetting.com, however, has the defending champions listed as a -140 moneyline favorite in their MLB Picks: Rockies vs Phillies MLB Betting Odds – August 5, 2009.
The Rockies continued their hot play last night, ringing up veteran left-hander Jamie Moyer for six hits and six earned runs in five innings. Garrett Atkins led the way with two hits, two runs, and four RBI to bring Colorado's overall record to 59-47. Jim Tracey's squad now has sole possession of the wild card spot in the National League as well as the number two spot in the NL West standings. Colorado is 6.5 games back of the Dodgers after winning seven of their last 10 games.
Twenty-eight year old southpaw Jorge De La Rosa will take the hill tonight for the Rockies. Tonight's start will be the 21st of the season for the Monterrey, Mexico native; he is 9-7 thus far with a 4.68 ERA. De La Rosa has been particularly effective away from Coors Field, going 4-2 in nine starts with a 3.76 ERA. The Rockies are 9-1 in the five year veteran's last 10 starts and 6-3 in his nine road starts this year.
The Phillies dropped their third straight game last night to fall to 59-45. Philadelphia, after winning 10 of their first 12 games out of the break, has now lost five of their last six contests. Despite the recent slump, Charlie Manuel's club still has a five game lead over the Florida Marlins in the National League East standings.
Manuel will counter De La Rosa with a left-hander of his own, 26 year old J.A. Happ. Happ will be making his 14th start of the season after beginning the year in the bullpen. Since joining the regular rotation, the Northwestern product is 5-2 with a 3.10 ERA. Philadelphia is 2-4 in the Illinois native's last six appearances and 3-3 in his six starts at Citizens Bank Park.
This evening's contest is set to get underway at 7:05pm ET at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
