Yankees Head To Anaheim, the New York Yankees split a four-game series with the Los Angeles Angels over last weekend and then split their four-game mid-week series with the Texas Rangers. By halving wins with their rivals, the Yankees haven't climbed in the standings too far.
They'll try to gain some ground on Saturday in the second game of their three-game weekend series with the Angels.
Saturday's pitching matchup will send Yankees rookie Dan Giese to the mound against Angels ace John Lackey, in what figures to be a pitching mismatch.
Giese has worked mostly out of the bullpen this year but will make his third start of the season on Saturday. He's been much more effective as a reliever, though.
In 11 appearances out of the bullpen, Giese is 1-1 with a 1.25 ERA . Opposing batters are hitting only .125 against him. But in two starts so far, Giese is 0-2 and has given up six earned runs in 10.2 innings of work.
Giese hasn't started since June 27 and has been mostly used as a bullpen stopgap since. He did face the Angels once (on August 3rd), pitching three scoreless innings of one-hit ball in relief of Darrell Rasner. It's worth noting that the Angles scored nine runs in the game but obviously none were off of Giese.
Giese will face Lackey, who started for the Angels in the aforementioned game and was lit up. Lackey gave up seven hits, four walks, four earned runs and a home run in six innings pitched.
Prior to that, the Angels had won 10 of his last 11 starts .
Lackey is 9-2 with a 3.10 ERA but he hasn't been too sharp since the start of July. He's allowed 26 earned runs in his last 38.2 innings pitched (6.46 ERA). He's also given up eight home runs in that span after allowing just six in his first 68.2 innings of work.
Lackey is 3-0 in day games with a 4.00 ERA.
