MLB Prediction: New York Yankees vs Minnesota Twins

by Alexander Banks on Monday, August 11th, 2008

Yankees Head To Minnesota, the New York Yankees are quickly fading in the race for the playoffs and if they lose another series, they might be completely out of it.

The Yankees were swept by the Los Angeles Angels and although there's nothing to be ashamed of when you lose to the best team in baseball, the Yankees can't afford many more losses against anyone.

After their three-game sweep at the hands of the Angels, the Yankees dropped to 8.5 back of the division-leading Tampa Bay Rays and four games back of the Boston Red Sox in the Wild Card.

Now the Yankees are in Minnesota, a team that is also competing for the Wild Card.

Tuesday's pitching matchup will be Mike Mussina against Nick Blackburn .

Mussina has been a pleasant surprise this year. He's 15-7 with a 3.25 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Although he's only had two starts in August, he is on pace for his best month of the season.

Mussina has allowed just one earned runs in 14 innings pitched in August and only 10 hits and three walks in that time. Pitching on the road has been his stronger suit this year as he's won six of his seven road decisions while posting an ERA of 2.94.

He's faced the Twins twice this year posting a 2-0 record while allowing just two earned runs in 14 innings pitched. Mussina has given up 14 hits and one walk in that span.

He'll face Blackburn, who has been so-so in his two outings against the Yankees this season. He's pitched only six innings in two starts giving up four earned runs.

Blackburn has been one of the key arms in the Twins rotation this year and the lefty's 9-6 record and 3.60 ERA are the evidence.

He hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his last seven starts and his ERA is 2.56 during that time. He's been far more reliable at home this season. At the Metrodome, he's 6-2 with a 2.55 ERA. On the road he is 3-4 with a 4.48 ERA.
