The surprise outing from Bullington spoiled a great start from the beleaguered A.J. Burnett, who allowed just four hits and one earned run in eight innings of work.
The unexpected loss dropped the Yanks record to 72-45 and reduced their Eastern division lead over the Rays to one game.
The injury plagued Tigers won for the third time in their last four games yesterday by taking their series finale in Chicago 13-8. The victory improved Detroit's record to 57-60, but the team still remains 10.5 games behind the Twins (won fourth game in a row on Sunday) in AL Central.
Tonight's starters are second year hurler Max Scherzer and 12 year veteran Javier Vazquez. Scherzer, who is 7-9 with a 4.03 ERA, has been superb in his last two starts for Detroit, yielding just 12 hits and three earned runs in 14 innings pitched. Vazquez (9-8, 4.90 ERA) has struggled of late, though, allowing 22 hits and 13 earned runs over 15.3 innings.
Ironically, the Tigers are 0-2 in Scherzer's last two appearances while the Yankees are 2-1 in Vazquez's last three outings.
