New York Yankees vs Toronto Blue Jays Free MLB Prediction

by Alexander Banks on Tuesday, August 19th, 2008

Yankees, Jays Fading In Wild Card Picture, the difference between the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees is only two games in the standings. The problem is that neither of them are close to either the American League East lead or the Wild Card standings. Currently the oddsmakers at BetOnline have the Toronto Blue Jays as the -.5 +115 favorites heading into this MLB matchup.

The Yankees trail Boston and Chicago/Minnesota, while the Jays are even further back of the Yankees.

While both teams have played uninspiring baseball recently, they will meet up in Toronto on Tuesday and try to gain some ground.

Darrell Rasner will start for the Yankees and he's been struggling since an early season groove. After four starts in May, Rasner was 3-1 with a 1.80 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP.

Since then, though, Rasner has been awful. In his last 67 innings pitched (13 starts), he's allowed 48 earned runs (6.44 ERA), 92 hits and 26 walks (1.76 WHIP). His record is 2-8 in those games while the Yankees are just 4-9 in those starts.

Rasner has started against the Blue Jays once this season and allowed seven hits and three earned runs in five innings of work on July 12th.

The Jays will send A.J. Burnett to the hill and he's been getting great run support of late.

On the whole, most teams wouldn't be overly thrilled with a pitcher who had an ERA of 4.67 and a WHIP of 1.44 but Burnett has won 15 games with the help of the Jays often-feeble lineup.

The Jays have scored six runs per game in Burnett's last nine wins, which is phenomenal considering they only average 4.3 runs per game for the other starting pitchers.

Burnett has given up 21 hits, five walks and four earned runs per start in 17.2 innings pitched in August but since the Jays have provided six runs per game, he's 3-0 this month. His 6.11 ERA in August puts him on pace for his worst month of the year.

He's faced the Yankees a couple of times this year winning both times and allowing just three earned runs in 14.1 innings pitched.
