Los Angeles lost for the fifth time in their last seven games last 
night as the Cardinals scratched out a 3-2 win at Dodger Stadium. The victory gave St. Louis the series win and it marked the fourth series loss in the Dodgers last five sets. Los Angeles seemingly insurmountable NL West lead has now dwindled to 3.5 games (Rockies) as a result of the club's 15-18 post-All-Star break record.
Jeff Weaver, who has worked mostly out of the bullpen for Joe Torre, will make his seventh start of the season for the Dodgers this evening. Weaver is 2-1 since being moved to the rotation with a 3.08 ERA. The Fresno State graduate has amassed a 5-4 record in 21 2009 appearances to go along with a 3.71 ERA.
The Cubs improved to 61-57 yesterday while avoiding a sweep at the hands of the Padres in San Diego. Chicago scored a 7-1 victory behind a brilliant performance from Rich Harden, leaving them six games behind St. Louis in the National League Central.
The Cubs have labored to win games on the road this year, going 26-35 away from Wrigley Field. They are 2-2 in four games against Los Angeles this season.
Making his fourth start for Chicago tonight is southpaw Tom Gorzelanny. Gorzelanny is 2-1 since being acquired by the Cubs with a 5.27 ERA. He has been outstanding in his two wins, giving up six hits and two earned runs over 12.1 innings. His lost was particuarly bad, though, as the Rockies blasted him for six hits and six earned in 1.1 innings at Coors Field.
This evening's game is scheduled to get underway at 10:10pm ET at Dodger Stadium.
