The Padres and Mets continue their series on Wednesday night in New York as former Padres pitcher Brian Lawrence gets the start for the Mets against his old team. Jake Peavy gets the nod for San Diego. Peavy is 13-5 with an ERA of 2.19 while Lawrence is 1-0 and has an ERA of 5.06. Lawrence hasn’t pitched very well for New York. He allowed four runs on four hits and four walks in his last outing. He has never faced the Padres in his career. SBG Global reports that early betting has the public taking the favored Padres on the Road.
San Diego Padres at New York Mets
Wednesday, 7:10 pm Eastern – ESPN 2
Peavy has been solid all year for San Diego. His ERA is one of the best in all of baseball but he doesn’t always get the win because the Padres offense can’t score. Peavy is also not happy with the Padres front office because he believes they have done little to help the team. "I'm more concerned about the team making a conscious effort to win a world championship," Peavy said. "At times I don't know if they've gone out on a limb to make it happen. I believe the big philosophy is right. But the first question I'd ask is, 'Can you give me your word that we're going to make an effort to win the World Series?'"
The Padres are having trouble scoring runs and they are not getting the type of production they need out of their staring lineup, including catcher Michael Barrett who was recently put on the DL. "He still has some reoccurring headaches," manager Bud Black said. "I think it's doubtful that he's coming off the disabled list once the 15 days are up. We're just hoping he continues to improve and is eligible to play come September."
"As of now, he's getting better each day," Black said. "First of all, we got to get him healthy and stay that way. I'm not familiar with, obviously, concussion-type symptoms. These are just concerning through a personal side, let alone a baseball side." Barrett was acquired from the Cubs on June 20. Barrett is hitting .248 with 29 runs scored, 37 RBIs and nine home runs for the season.
The Padres have less than 40 games to go before the regular season ends. San Diego was sitting in second place behind the Diamondbacks in the National League West standings. "I think, well, there's still a quarter of a season left," Black said. "What lies ahead of us is for us to play good baseball. At this point, we still determine our own fate. There's still 40 games left on the schedule. This is a time where … you can't afford to not play good baseball. And with that said, part of our strength for the first three quarters of the season has been our overall consistency of play."
"We haven't lost four games in a row. We've shown great resiliency after a tough loss to bounce back and win," Black said. "We have shown a resolve during the first third of the season that will remain intact as we go forward through these last 40 games.”
