Free MLB Prediction Cardinals vs Astros

by Alexander Banks on Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Cardinals head to streaky Astros, the St. Louis Cardinals may be too far back to compete for the National League Central but they are still in the hunt for the Wild Card. On Saturday, they will try to cut into that lead as they head to Houston to face the Astros. Currently the oddsmakers at BetOnline.com have the St. Louis Cardinals listed with -125 odds against the +115 Houston Astros heading into this MLB matchup.

The Astros have been playing better baseball of late but for them, it will be too little too late. They'll try to play spoiler as the Cards come to town.

The Cards will send Braden Looper to the bump on Saturday and those betting on baseball  know he's been one of the best pitchers in the league over the last month.

Since July 24th, Looper has started seven games and has allowed more than two earned runs in a start just once when he gave up three earned runs in seven innings work last Sunday.

In those seven starts, Looper has pitched 47 innings and allowed 12 earned runs in that span (2.30 ERA). Surprisingly, the Cardinals are 3-4 in those seven starts despite the stellar pitching. The problem has been that they themselves have only averaged four runs per outing.

Looper has started four games against Houston this season and he's allowed 16 runs in 23 innings pitched.

Brian Moehler will start for the Astros and has been very hot of late. The Astros have won five of his last six starts and he's 4-1 in that time.

Moehler has a better ERA on the road but opposing batters are actually hitting him for a better average when he's away from home. The difference has been the home runs. Moehler's ERA at home is 4.22 and opposing batters are hitting .268 against him but he's given up nine home runs in 64 innings pitched Away from home, Moehler has a 3.75 ERA while opposing hitters are batting .284 against him but he's given up just six home runs in 57.2 innings of work.

Those who are betting on baseball know the Cards have more to play for but pressure doesn't always translate into wins.
