Free MLB Picks: Braves at Mets MLB Odds – September 23, 2009

by Reno Gold on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

MLB Picks – Braves at Mets MLB Odds: The Atlanta Braves need to make up a five game deficit in the National League Wild Card race to make the playoffs – however, with 11 games left in the regular season, closing the gap with wild card leader Colorado might be difficult. Fortunately, eight of the 11 games Atlanta must play are against losing teams including seven games with the woeful Nationals. On Wednesday (7:10 pm ET) the Braves will be looking to close out their current series with the Mets at Citi Field in New York with a sweep. Getting the starting call for Atlanta is right hander Tim Hudson. The veteran Braves starting pitcher is 1-1 on the year with a 3.70 ERA. Countering for New York is Mike Pelfrey. The Mets righthander is 10-11 on the year with a 5.10 ERA.

MLB picks oddsmakers at SPORTSBETTING.com list the Braves as -113 odds favorites on moneyline  with a 8 1/2 total. Mets backers are getting +115 moneyline odds.

Hudson retired the first 10 Phillies batters he faced on Friday night but was then damaged by the power of Ryan Howard, whose two homers accounted for the three runs the Braves right-hander allowed in seven innings. Four starts into his return from Tommy John elbow reconstruction surgery, Hudson finds himself still searching for consistent control. Still, two blown saves are all that separate him from winning each of his first three starts.

Pelfrey was battered around in his last start against the Braves, giving up a career-high nine earned runs in 4 1/3 innings in an 11-0 loss. In his only start against Atlanta at Citi Field, though, Pelfrey limited the Braves to two runs on six hits in seven innings. The lefties in the Braves' lineup have excelled in their careers against Pelfrey, as Adam LaRoche is 4-for-4, Brian McCann is 11-for-23 with a home run and Chipper Jones is 6-for-15 with two long balls.

Jair Jurrjens allowed one run over seven innings to earn the win, as the Braves downed the Mets 3-1 on Tuesday night. Atlanta cashed as -185 road favorites, while the teams played UNDER the 8-run total set by oddsmakers.

Yunel Escobar was 2-for-4 with two runs batted in for the Braves, who got a run batted in from Adam LaRoche in the payday. Luis Castillo went 2-for-3 with a run batted in for New York, while Nelson Figueroa gave up two runs over seven innings to take the loss for the Mets.
