The San Diego Padres have gone into a four-game funk, and are now in danger of falling behind in the NL wild-card chase with only six games remaining in the regular season. Following Monday’s loss to the Giants at San Francisco, the Padres’ find themselves tied with the Philadelphia Phillies in the wild-card race. Tonight, the Padres must avoid losing their fifth straight game and hope the Phillies stumble against the Braves in order to reclaim sole possession of the wild-card lead.
RHP Brett Tomko (4-11, 5.36 ERA) gets his sixth start for the Padres since his being picked up off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers. Since joining the Padres, Tomko has a personal two game winning streak and the Padres have won the last three games Tomko started.
RHP Matt Cain (7-16, 3.68) will toe the rubber for the Giants with hopes of playing spoiler to the Padres playoff hopes. Cain and the Giants were victims of a 6-0 blanking by Tomko and the Padres in San Diego on Sept. 15.
The Padres were hammered 9-4 by the Giants in Monday's series opener, as -140 favorites. The combined 13 runs sailed OVER the posted over/under (7.5).
Brian Giles drove in two runs in a losing effort for the Padres. Pitcher Chris Young surrendered eight hits and seven runs over five innings.
Omar Vizquel was 3-for-4 at the plate, and drove in four runs to lead the Giants. Barry Zito allowed eight hits and four runs over five innings for the win.
The Giants won the game as +130 underdogs.
