Los Angeles Angels vs Boston Red Sox NLDS Game 4 Pick

by Alexander Banks on Monday, October 6th, 2008

Los Angeles Angels vs. Boston Red Sox ALDS Game 4 Pick: The Angels, on the brink of elimination, salvaged their post season hopes Sunday by getting an American League Divisional Series victory in Game-3 over the Boston Red Sox on the road at Fenway Park. Monday, the Angels can force a fifth game back at Angels Stadium in Anaheim if they can pick up a win.

The Halo’s starting pitching rotation returns to right hander John Lackey, who got the losing decision in Game-1 in spite of his good performance. Lackey will try to redeem himself with a win that would continue the series. Again Lackey will face Red Sox ace left hander Jon Lester. A win for Lester and the White Sox would keep Boston on track for a second world championship in as many years.

Oddsmakers at online sportsbook Bodog (Bodoglife.com) currently have the Red Sox listed as 140-money line favorites versus the Angels, while the game's total is sitting at 8½. Angels backers are getting +130 money line odds as the road underdog.

Lackey went 6 2/3 innings and allowed just a two-run home run to Jason Bay in the Angels Game-1, 4-1 loss. That was just one of four hits he allowed, along with two walks and four strikeouts. Lackey, who was 12-5 with a 3.75 ERA during the regular season, has lost two straight playoff starts to the Red Sox. He was also the losing pitcher in a 4-0 loss to Josh Beckett in the opener of the 2007 ALDS.

Boston needs a long outing for Jon Lester in today’s game to rest an already exhausted Red Sox bullpen. Lester was very effective going  seven-innings in Game 1 of the ALDS to an early advantage over the Angels. Lester has experience getting the starting nod in potential clinchers. He worked 5 2/3 scoreless innings in Game 4 of the World Series last year to get the win as the Red Sox swept the Rockies.

The Angels stayed alive in Sunday’s Game-3 with a 5-4 win over Boston in extra innings as a +135 underdogs. The nine runs scored caused this game to be a PUSH on the posted over/under total (9). Erick Aybar delivered an RBI single in the 12th inning to plate the game-winner for the Angels, while Mike Napoli was 3-5 with two home runs and three RBI in the win. Jacoby Ellsbury was 2-5 with three RBI for Boston and Javier Lopez was tagged with the loss after surrendering the game-winning run in the 12th inning.
