Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers NLCS Game 5 Pick

by Alexander Banks on Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers NLCS Game 5 Pick: With a win tonight over the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Philadelphia Phillies will punch their ticket to the MLB World Series. Trailing 3-to-1 in the best of seven games National League Championship Series, the Dodgers need nothing short of a miracle in Wednesday’s game.  LA will pin its hopes on Chad Billingsley. The Dodgers righthander finished the regular season with a 16-10 record and 3.14 ERA. The Phillies will look to Cole Hamels to pitch  the team to a berth in the Fall Classic. Lefthander Hamels completed the season with a 14-10 record with a 3.09 ERA.

Oddsmakers at sportsbook Bodog (Bodoglife.com) currently have the Phillies listed as 119-moneyline favorites versus the Dodgers, while the game's total is sitting at 7½. As an underdog, the Phillies are drawing a money line price of -105.

Hamels shut down the Brewers to open the National League Championship Series and then did the same to the Dodgers in the NLCS opener. In Game 5, the 24-year-old finds himself on yet another big stage, this time with the chance to send his team to its first World Series since 1993. Including the postseason, Wednesday's start will be his fourth against the Dodgers this year. Hamels has pitched well against Los Angeles, posting a 2-0 record and allowing only six earned runs in 21 innings.

If it's the Billingsley that ranked seventh in the league with a 3.14 ERA and won Game 2 of the NLDS against the Cubs, Los Angeles has a strong chance. But if it's the Billingsley that lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his last start against the Phillies, winter will likely arrive in a hurry. Working in Billingsley's favor is a 1.65 ERA in his last eight starts at Dodger Stadium.

Matt Stairs' pinch-hit, two-run homer highlighted a four-run eighth inning as the Phillies downed the Dodgers 7-5 to take a 3-1 lead in the NLCS on Monday night. Philadelphia won as +160 road underdogs as the game played over the 7.5-run total posted by oddsmakers. Shane Victorino also smashed a two-run dinger in the eighth for the Phillies, while Ryan Madson picked up the win in relief of starter Joe Blanton for Philadelphia.

Casey Blake went 2-for-5 with a solo shot for Los Angeles, as Cory Wade was handed the loss after coming in for Dodgers starter Derek Lowe.
