The Colorado Rockies are now four wins away from a world championship after Monday night’s victory at Coors Field in Denver over the Arizona Diamondbacks capping a four-game sweep to win the National League Pennant. The Rockies will now play the waiting game to see if their opponent in the franchises’ first World Series will be the Boston Red Sox or the Cleveland Indians. Cleveland currently holds a 2-1 ALCS series lead following Monday’s win.
At the beginning of the 2007 MLB season, the Rockies were not among the teams expected to contend for the world championship. They were such an unlikely choice that oddsmakers at online sports book Bodog (Bodoglife.com) had them installed as extreme 100/1 odds longshots to win the World Series. And today, those backing Colorado in April at the virtual betting window are four games away from a $10,000 pay day based on a $100 futures bet.
If you remember back in the spring, star first baseman Todd Helton was even mentioned in trade talks and not much was expected from the pitching staff in spite of its mild 2006 success.
The Rockies began the first half of the season following the Dodgers, the Diamondbacks and Padres for most of the season. However, by August, Colorado showed a steady series of wins, while the division-leading Dodgers began to struggle.
By September, the Dodgers were eliminated by the Rockies from playoff contention, and the Diamondbacks were expected to clinch the NL West division title, while the Padres held a steady lead on the NL wild card spot. The Diamondbacks eventually clinched the NL West division title, but the Rockies shot up with one of the greatest comebacks in baseball history. They were a major-league best 20-8 in September, after trailing six games on September 1st. Their 90-73 regular season mark set a franchise record.
The Rockies have become the first team ever to sweep both the division series and league championship series in the same post-season.
