If the Yankees get the win, they will win the American League pennant and face the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2009 World Series. Getting the start for Los Angeles will be Joe Saunders. The Angels lefthander went 16-7 in the regular season with a 4.52 ERA. New York will counter with Andy Pettitte who is 15-8 with a 4.08 ERA.
In Game 3, an 11 inning Yankees loss, Pettitte held the Angels scoreless for four innings before cracking in the fifth and sixth, ultimately watching as the bullpen took the loss. With his next win, Pettitte will become the all-time Major League leader in postseason wins with 16.
Saunders, who has had nagging shoulder problems much of the regular season seems to be in good health and was effective versus the Yankees in his last start in Game 2 of the ALCS. Saunders pitched through the seventh, holding the Yankees to two runs, one on a solo homer by Derek Jeter. He struck out Mark Teixeira to close a perfect first inning and put away Melky Cabrera after Robinson Cano's RBI triple in the second. Saunders induced double-play grounders from Jeter in the fifth, Hideki Matsui in the sixth and Cano in the seventh.
The Angels avoided elimination with a 7-6 victory over the Yankees in Game 5 last time out as a -110 pick'em. The 13 runs sailed OVER the posted over/under (8.5). Vladimir Guerrero went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI for the Angels in that game. Kevin Jepsen picked up the win in relief, and Brian Fuentes closed out the game for his first save of the postseason. Mark Teixeira had two hits and drove in three runs for the Yankees. Phil Hughes gave up the winning run and took the loss in relief.
