Phillies vs Yankees Game 2 World Series Predictions 2009: The Yankees will host the Phillies again this evening as the defending World Champions look to take a 2-0 lead in the Fall Classic. Philadelphia went up 1-0 last night, scoring a 6-1 victory as Cliff Lee tossed a complete game gem in front of a stunned New York crowd. Tonight's game is set to get underway at 7:57pm ET at the new Yankee Stadium; it will be broadcast live on FOX. Philadelphia had just four hits off of Yanks ace C.C. Sabathia last night, but two of those were bombs by second baseman Chase Utley. Utley's dingers allowed the Phillies to carry a 2-0 lead through seven innings, but they broke things open against the New York bullpen in the eight and ninth innings, scoring two runs in the top of each frame. The late game offense was hardly needed though, as Cliff Lee turned in a masterful performance. The southpaw gave up just six hits and struck out 10 (no walks) in nine innings. New York scored its lone run in the ninth on a throwing error by shortstop Jimmy Rollins.

The Phillies are hoping Pedro Martinez can put together a Lee-like effort tonight and send them back to Citizens Bank Park with a 2-0 series lead. Martinez has made just nine starts this season, but the 38 year old is 5-1 with a 3.63 ERA in those outings. He last pitched on October 16th, going seven innings against the Dodgers in a 2-1 Philly loss. He gave up just two hits in that game and did not allow an earned run.

Tonight will mark Martinez' 15th playoff start and his seventh post-season appearance against the Yankees. In his previous six playoff outings against New York, the Dominican native went 1-2 with a 3.89 ERA. He worked a total of 34.1 innings, giving up 30 hits and 18 earned runs while striking out 40.

New York will counter Martinez with 32 year old A.J. Burnett. The right-hander, who will be making his first ever World Series start, finished the regular season with a 13-9 record and 4.04 ERA. He has made three starts in these playoffs but has not been the pitcher of record in any of them, despite working 18.1 innings with a 2.70 ERA.

Burnett acknowledged that tonight's start is a significant moment for him as a pitcher.

"I'm excited," Burnett said. "I'm going to prepare, yeah, maybe as another game, but deep down I know what it's about. I know how real it is, and I don't want to change it."
