World Series 2009 – Yankees at Phillies Game 3: The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Yankees continue World Series 2009 with Game 3 Saturday night (8 pm ET) at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Looking to take advantage of home field advantage, Phillies manager Charlie Manuel will give the ball to starter Cole Hamels hoping the lefthander can recapture some of his 2008 post season magic. Yankees manager Joe Girardi will send veteran lefthander Andy Pettitte to the mound for the Bombers.
Pettitte has been in a groove in all three of his postseason outings, he has pitched 6 1/3 innings, never allowing more than three runs or fewer than one. Most importantly for Pettitte, the control problems that have plagued him at times this season have vanished over his three postseason outings, he has struck out 15 batters and walked just three.
Hamels is 1-1 with a 6.75 ERA in three postseason starts. He has allowed 20 hits, 11 runs, two walks and six home runs in 14 1/3 innings. He has struck out 12 and opponents have hit .328 against him. Hamels is 0-1 with a 2.77 ERA in two career starts against the Yankees.
Mark Teixeira and Hideki Matsui homered as the Yankees defeated the Phillies 3-1 in Game 2 of the series on Thursday. The Yankees won that game as -190 favorites, while the teams played UNDER the posted over/under (9). Jorge Posada drove in the other run for the Yankees. A.J. Burnett tossed seven innings for the win, fanning nine batters along the way.
Matt Stairs had the lone RBI for the Phillies, who were +170 underdogs. Pedro Martinez gave up all three runs in the loss.
