The New York Yankees travel to the Twin Cities to play the Minnesota Twins tonight in a game that is sure to produce plenty of runs. Ponson hasn’t had a major league start since starting for the Yankees back on August 18 at Fenway Park in Boston. The Red Sox hit him hard scoring seven runs on nine hits in three innings of a 14-11 win. In 2006 Ponson appeared in 19 games with two clubs, the Yankees and Cardinals. He pitched 85 innings giving up 108 hits and 62 runs for a 6.25 ERA. Ponson also walked 36 while striking out 48. This will be Ponson’s debut as a Twin.
Carl Pavano, started the season opener for the Yankees on April 2 but was not included in the decision in the Yankees 9-5 win over the Tampa Bay Devil Rays in Yankee Stadium. In a rough 4.1 innings pitched, Pavano gave up six hits and five runs including one home run resulting in an 8.31 ERA. Pavano in his career has a respectable 4.28 ERA.
Hideki Matsui was put on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday after straining his left hamstring in the season opener. Center fielder Johnny Damon has sat out since last week’s opener when he strained a calf muscle but is expected to play tonight.
