Kansas City Royals 2010 Baseball Predictions: Not much went right for the Royals last season, and, for that matter, not much has gone right for the franchise for the better part of the past 20 years. The team returned to the AL Central cellar after a brief 2008 respite, finishing with a 65-97 record. Kansas City brass is hopeful that a few off-season maneuvers and some better luck in the injury department keep the team in the mix for the Central crown. 2010 Baseball Predictions at SPORTSBETTING.com are not sure, though, as the Royals are presently listed at +1800 odds to win the division. Kansas City struggled offensively in 2009 ranking 23rd in the league in runs (686), 26th in on-base percentage (.318), and 23rd in RBI (657). While the Royals do not figure to be an offensive powerhouse this season, the team's numbers should improve with the additions of Rick Ankiel and Scott Podsenik. Other capable bats that were with the team last season include Billy Butler, who had 21 home runs and 93 RBI last year, Alberto Callaspo, Davis DeJesus, and Jose Guillen. Kansas City also traded third baseman Mark Teahen to the White Sox for second baseman Chris Getz and third baseman/outfielder Josh Fields. Getz should replace Callaspo, who had 17 errors in 2009, at second base, immediately improving the club's defense. The Royals had the third most errors in the majors last year with 116 and their .981 fielding percentage ranked 28th in the league. Kansas City's pitching staff, outside of Zack Greinke's Cy Young award winning campaign, was a disaster last season. Injuries to starters Gil Meche and Brian Bannister coupled with poor performance on the part of Kyle Davies and Luke Hochevar limited the overall effectiveness of the rotation, often leading to an overworked bullpen. The relief staff's numbers reflected such as it ranked 29th in ERA (5.02) and WHIP (1.55). Meche and Bannister are both healthy now, and they should make a nice two and three compliment to Greinke's one if they remain that way. Hochevar and Davies are still question marks, though; both have shown flashes of quality mixed in with an abundance of wretchedness. The bullpen has some good arms and one of the games best closers in Joakim Soria; however, they will need the starting rotation to work deeper into games on a consistent basis if they are to remain effective over the course of the season. 2010 Baseball Predictions: Fourth Place AL Central. Starting rotation has some bright spots, but there are still too many questions. Offense should be better than a year ago, but the upside, as the team is currently constructed, is middle of the pack. Chicago White Sox 2010 Baseball Predictions: The Chicago White Sox, now almost five years removed from their latest World Series crown, appear to be in prime position to capture the AL Central Division this season. However, Ozzie Guillen's squad must hurdle the always troublesome Twins, which is often easier said than done. 2010 Baseball Predictions at Sportsbook.com have the Sox listed as the second favorite to win the Central, Minnesota is the favorite, at +160 moneyline odds. The White Sox had a busy off-season trying to revamp a roster that had lost some of its offensive pop. Granted, the team still banged out 184 home runs, which ranked eighth in the league, but they ranked 19th in runs, 18th in RBI, 20th in on-base percentage, and 21st in batting average. The brass attempted to address those problems by trading for third baseman Mark Teahen and signing Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones. Gone are longtime right fielder Jermaine Dye as well as second baseman Chris Getz and infielder/outfielder Josh Fields. The changes should help, especially if Gordon Beckham and Alexi Ramirez can continue to ascend and Alex Rios and Carlos Quentin (injury) rebound from difficult seasons. Infield defense could still be an issue for the Sox, which were second to last in fielding percentage in the American League last year. Teahen, Beckham, and Ramirez combined for 45 errors in 2009. Chicago's pitching staff should be one of the best in the American League, with last year's big catch Jake Peavy fully recovered from an ankle injury. Peavy will serve as the ace of a rotation that also includes Mark Buehrle, John Danks, Gavin Floyd, and, most likely, Freddy Garcia. In 2009, with Peavy just pitching three games for the team, the Sox ranked seventh in team ERA (4.14) and seventh in starting WHIP (1.31). The bullpen had some holes last season, finishing 23rd in WHIP, 18th in ERA, and 26th in batting average against; however, there are some quality arms in Chicago's reliever mix (J.J. Putz, Bobby Jenks, Matt Thornton, Scott Linebrink, and Tony Pena) that should reduce those numbers. 2010 Baseball Predictions: First Place AL Central. Sox staff edges the Twins and the offense should be able to produce as many or more runs than any team in the division. Oakland Athletics 2010 Baseball Predictions: The Oakland A's fell to the AL West cellar for the first time since 1998 last season after putting together a 75-87 record. However, the situation in the Bay Area has not been good for at least three years, with the club finishing in third place in 2008 and 2007. Online bookmaker Sportsbook.com is forecasting a similar result for the Athletics this year, listing them at +500 odds to win the AL West in their 2010 Baseball Predictions. The Oakland bats did not produce much pop last season, finishing 14th in RBI (723) and 27th in home runs (135). The team was middle of the pack in runs and batting average as well, ranking 14th and 15th respectively. The A's offensive numbers figure to be much the same this year with the only major addition being the injury prone Coco Crisp. The only real power bat in the lineup is that of DH Jack Cust, so, the team will rely mostly on small ball to get runs across the plate. Last year's .328 on-base percentage (21st in the league) suggests that Oakland's fate may rest with the pitching staff. Last year the A's arms did a solid job, posting a team ERA of 4.26 (11th); however, most of that came from a lights out bullpen that ranked second in the majors with a 3.54 ERA. The starters were 22nd in ERA (4.76), 26th in strikeouts (610), and 26th in WHIP (1.47). The return of Justin Duchscherer, who missed all of last season with a back injury, will help augment a promising young rotation. Dallas Braden, Brett Anderson, Trevor Cahill, and Vin Mazzaro all have great upside (average age 23.3 years) and should be all the better this season after gaining valuable experience last year. 2010 Baseball Predictions: Fourth Place AL West. Not enough offensive pop to compete with the Rangers, Angels, and Mariners. Pitching staff, while certainly talented, is probably a year away from being a consistent force. Los Angeles Angels 2010 Baseball Predictions: The Los Angeles Angels have dominated the AL West Division in recent years, topping the standings in five of the last six seasons. They will look to continue that success this year but with a few new characters in the lineup. Los Angeles Angels 2010 Baseball Predictions at SPORTSBETTTING.com have Mike Scioscia's squad pegged as a co-favorite, along with the Mariners, to win the AL West at +175 moneyline odds. The Angels posted an impressive 97-65 record last season in route to their third consecutive division crown. Los Angeles, which bested second place Texas by 10 games, leaned heavily on their offense in 2009, and it did not disappoint, ranking in the top quarter of the league in categories such as runs (883), RBI (841), batting average (.285), and on-base percentage (.350). Los Angeles rode its potent offense to a 3-0 sweep on the Red Sox in the Division Series (averaged 5.3 runs per game) before falling 4-2 to the Yankees in the League Championship. While the team did lose table setter Chone Figgins (Seattle) and a power bat in Vladimir Guerrero (Texas), they retained Bobby Abreu and brought in World Series MVP Hideki Matsui. Runs should still be aplenty with those two players joining the likes of Erick Aybar, Torii Hunter, Kendry Morales, and Howie Kendrick. Surprisingly, the pitching staff faltered last year, ranking 21st in team ERA (4.45 overall, 4.44 starters, 4.49 bullpen) and 24th in batting average against. Like last year, this off-season saw the departure of a major cog in the pitching staff as longtime stalwart John Lackey signed with Boston. However, the Angels did add former Cardinal Joel Pineiro (3.49 ERA, 15-12 record in 2009) to join a rotation that includes Jered Weaver, Joe Saunders, Ervin Santana, and Scott Kazmir/Matt Palmer. The bullpen, despite last year's sub-par numbers, should be decent in 2010. Brian Fuentes, who led the majors in saves with 48 a year ago, returns to the closer role and the Angels signed Fernando Rodney to serve as the setup man. 2010 Baseball Predictions: First place AL West. Seattle could challenge, but the Angels get the nod on the starting rotation one through five and Los Angeles offense should be far superior to Seattle's. Texas Rangers 2010 Baseball Predictions: The Texas Rangers put together a respectable season in 2009, finishing second to the Angels in the AL West with an 87-75 record. The club is hoping to keep that win number climbing this year, despite having to square off against stellar rivals Los Angeles and Seattle on a regular basis. Texas Rangers 2010 Baseball Predictions at SPORTSBETTING.com have the team pegged for third place in the West at +225 moneyline odds. The Rangers 2009 offense took a step back from their league leading 901 runs scored in 2008; however, they still produced 784 runs and ranked second in home runs (224) and 10th in RBI (784). If Josh Hamilton can stay healthy this year, which is a big if considering he is already dealing with a spring training injury issue, Texas' offensive numbers are likely to creep closer to 2008 levels. There are no shortage of bats in the Rangers lineup, with the likes of Hamilton, Ian Kinsler, Nelson Cruz, and Michael Young making up the heart of the order. This team will, once again, be a handful for any opposing pitching staff to deal with, especially in Arlington. Texas' pitching staff was a mixed bag last year as its starting rotation lacked consistency, piecing together a 4.61 ERA, while the bullpen turned in a 3.95 ERA and ranked ninth in the league with a .244 batting average against. The acquisition of Rich Harden will go a long way toward helping solidify the rotation, giving it a legitimate number one to go along with solid arms in Scott Feldman and Tommy Hunter. The relief crew should be solid again with the return of closer Frank Francisco, who recorded 11 saves in April and May of last year while giving up just one earned run, and a good mix of short and long guys in C.J. Wilson, Dustin Nippert, and Darren O'Day. 2010 Baseball Predictions: Third place in the AL West. Great offense, but even with Harden, the starting rotation does not match up with the Mariners and Angels one through five.
