Two teams fighting for the top of the National League West open up a series on Tuesday as the Arizona Diamondbacks meet the San Diego Padres. San Diego scored 18 runs on Sunday in an 18-11 win over Houston while the Diamondbacks had their winning streak snapped in a 14-0 loss to Atlanta. The Padres outbreak of offense was a real surprise. They had scored more than five runs only once in 16 games since the All-Star break. "We took the walks, we got the hits, and when they made mistakes, we did damage," said Mike Cameron. The Padres are still tied for last in the majors with a .244 team batting average. It was only the Padres third victory in their last 10 games but they are only a half game out of the division lead held by Arizona and Los Angeles.

Arizona had won eight straight before Sunday’s shellacking by the Braves. It was the Diamondbacks' largest margin of defeat since an 18-4 loss to the New York Mets on Aug. 24, 2005. "Everybody says you'd rather get beat by 14 than one," Arizona manager Bob Melvin said, "Well, it doesn't feel very good when you get beat by 14 runs, but we just have to look at it as one. We've been playing well, we have an off-day (Monday), and then we have a couple big series in front of us."
Arizona goes with their ace, Brandon Webb (9-8, 3.23 ERA) who looks to win back-to-back starts for the first time since early June. He held Florida to six hits in seven shutout innings in his last start. "Sometimes that's the way it works out," Webb said. "You know you don't have your best stuff, so you tend to concentrate a little bit more and battle, and that's what I did." In 17 career starts against the Padres he is 3-6 with a 3.72 ERA.
San Diego goes with Justin Germano (6-5, 4.20), who has been superb against Arizona in the past. He held them to four hits in 6 1-3 innings in a 4-0 win on July 15. Last Wednesday Germano look the loss in a 10-2 defeat at Colorado after giving up six runs in five innings. Germano is 1-5 with a 6.18 ERA of late.
