MLB National League Rookies To Watch

by Thomas Jensen on Thursday, April 12th, 2007

MLB National League Rookies To WatchExperts see much value and potential in the National League this year. Projected future starters and stars will come out of this group. Following the American League rookies, these are your top rookies to draft in the National League.

National League

Chris Young, Arizona Diamondbacks
It seems appropriate that the top-rated rookies in both leagues share the last name of Young. This less-heralded outfielder (and don’t confuse him with the Padres pitcher, either) could easily be a 20-homer, 20-steal guy in his rookie season.

Kevin Kouzmanoff, San Diego Padres
Acquired in the deal that sent Josh Barfield to the Indians, he fills the team’s vacancy at third. With a starting spot assured, he can concentrate on hitting, which he does very well. He led the minors in slugging percentage last season, and his power numbers should carry over despite playing his home games at Petco Park.

Scott Thorman, Atlanta Braves
The departure of Adam LaRoch opened up a spot at first for Thorman, but he’ll probably platoon there with Craig Wilson. Still, facing mostly right-handers from a spot in the lower part of the order, he should be in position to succeed. He played mostly outfield last season, so the dual eligibility will increase his value a bit more.

Homer Bailey, Cincinnati Reds
He’s rocketed through the minor leagues and, at 20, could step into the Cincinnati rotation right now. It looks like the flame-throwing right-hander will start the season in Triple-A to make sure he stays on a regular schedule, but a call-up as early as May isn’t out of the question.

Chris Iannetta, Colorado Rockies
Good power, nice patience at the plate and regular playing time at Coors Field make him a solid performer. He and the Diamondbacks’ Miguel Montero are a part of what’s turning out to be a nice collection of young NL catchers.

Also worth watching:
Ryan Braun, Brewers; Josh Hamilton, Reds; Jason Hirsh, Rockies; Troy Tulowitzki, Rockies; James Loney, Dodger
