MLB Wagers: Betting the World Series

by Alexander Banks on Friday, October 20th, 2006

MLB Wagers: Betting the World SeriesAll of my friends realize that betting a baseball game is the most exciting bet in sports. There is no time limit, no reviews from the booth that nobody asked for and it truly is a game of inches.

Most of us realize that handicapping the World Series is a waste of time. Don’t look at stats, figure out which team has had the tougher road to get there since the start of the postseason, (by the way that line of thought works for the Super Bowl too) and bet them.

So this year it’s easy right? The Tigers swept the west champion A’s, and never let the Yankees get off the ground, and beat the Bombers three straight after losing game one. So there you are, bet the Tigers!

But just when I was ready to do that, my friend Big Bruce threw a monkey wrench into the thought process. He said think of it this way, for years now the Cardinals have been dominating the National League, winning 95 to 100 games every year and then getting bounced in the playoffs, right? 'Yes Bruce, we all know that, what’s your point,' I said. He replied 'What if this is the year nobody gives LaRussa and company a shot after backing in to the National League Central title, and they do win it all!'

Suddenly I saw his point. Just when the Cards are not the big guys on the block and favored to win, they show up and win it all. It could be THEIR year of “destiny”. So thanks (for now anyway) Bruce for stopping me from betting the Tigers to win the series.

Here is my revised plan for the series. Even though I dislike Kenny Rogers, I will bet him against the Cards because he has really taken his game to another level. I will bet the over in the games started by Jeff Weaver and Justin Verlander whether they go against each other or not.  So there,I have about 4 or 5 bets for the series, maybe more. I really don’t like either team here but baseball fans must make bets on the Fall Classic.

SECOND GUESSING:
-Two problems with the Mets in game seven; Using Cliff Floyd to pinch- hit instead of bunting. Floyd was a DP waiting to happen if he didn’t strike out. And you lose the game 7 without using Billy Wagner, the guy you paid the most $$$ the Mets have ever given a pitcher?

-Snow is forecast for game 1, making pitching rotations will be important in this series. Rogers and Carpenter may get 3 starts each if there is a snow out. If there is a delay due to the elements, it will help the Cards because their bullpen is not as deep as that of Detroit.
