NBA Picks: Orlando Magic vs Detroit Pistons

by Alexander Banks on Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

The Detroit Pistons start off the unofficial second half of the season of NBA Picks when they host the Orlando Magic in the Motor city.  The Pistons come into this one as one of the hottest teams in the league prior to the break winning 10 in a row and sit at 39-13 behind only the Boston Celtics for the best record in the league.  The Pistons certainly hopes that the All-Star break didn't ruin their momentum.   The Pistons have been almost unbeatable at home this season posting an impressive 21-4 SU mark.  In fact, Detroit has led by at least 25 points in each of their last three home games.  This will be the fourth meeting between these two clubs that has seen Detroit go a perfect 3-0 SU and 2-1 ATS in the previous games.  As has been the case in all of Detroit’s successful seasons their defense leads the way allowing only 86 points per game.  Surprisingly their offense hasn’t had problems scoring as they average a very respectable 99 points per game.  All of the hype about Detroit hasn’t seemed to fall on deaf ears as BetOnline.com has the Pistons listed as a -6.5 point home favorite.

The Orlando Magic start after the All Star break a bit of an enigma.  The Magic have really struggled at home going only 14-11 SU but leads the NBA in road wins with 19.  The Magic are hoping that Dwight Howard’s monster 23-point, 24-rebound performance just prior to the All Star break will continue into the second half of the season.  Howard’s performance came two days after coach Stan Van Gundy singled him out for a lack of defensive intensity.  The lack of the team’s defensive intensity has certainly shown this season as the Magic are allowing a whopping 101 points per game Fortunately for Orlando they have been able to keep pace with their porous defense as they are scoring an average of 104 points per game.  However, in their three meetings with the Piston’s this season they have only cracked the 100 point mark once.

It has been tough to not only beat Detroit at home this season but also when they are winning as they are a profitable 14-5 ATS after having won 8 or more of their last 10 games this season.  That might not worry Orlando backers all that much tonight as they Magic are 13-4 ATS revenging a loss where opponent scored 100 or more points this season.
