NBA Picks: Boston Celtics vs Golden State Warriors

by Alexander Banks on Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

The Boston Celtics try to get back on track in NBA Picks tonight when they play their second game in as many day versus the Golden State Warriors.  Last night Boston All-Star Kevin Garnett played for the first time in nine games due to a strained abdominal muscle last night but scored only four points with eight rebounds while playing 20 minutes.  Boston is hoping that Garnett will more playing time tonight and get them back into the win column after last night’s 124-118 loss to Denver.   The Boston loss last night was the first time this season that the Celtics lost to a Western Conference team going 16-0.  The Celtics who sport the #1 defense in the NBA looked anything but as Carmelo Anthony scored 29 points and Allen Iverson 28 while Marcus Camby nearly had a triple-double.  The Celtics offense didn’t disappoint scoring 118 points while they are averaging 100 per game on the season.  It appears that the odds makers are being a bit cautious in this one as Boston is listed as a small -3 point road favorite at Bodog.com

The Golden State Warriors who had their three game winning streak snapped last night should give the Celtics' defense another tough test tonight in NBA Picks action.  The Warriors lead the league in offense scoring an average of 109.9 points per game.  It might just turn out to be another track meet as the Warrior defense doesn’t’ appear to be able to put up much of a challenge to the Celtics as they are allowing a high 108.9 points per game.  They are also not the best under the glass getting out rebounded by their opponents this season by a 57 to 50 margin.  If Garnett can play some minutes tonight the Warriors will have try and counter that rebounding disadvantage.

Golden State seems to be able to pick it up a bit when facing good teams as they are a profitable 16-5 ATS in home games when playing against a team with a winning record  during the 2nd half of the season over the last 3 seasons.  In contrast they Celtics seem to run out of gas after high scoring affairs as they are only 31-53 ATS after scoring 100 points or more 3 straight games since 1996.
