The Phoenix Suns will take their new investment for a test drive Wednesday night when they start post man Shaquille O'Neil in their home game against the team whom Shaq spent his most productive years, the Los Angeles Lakers. Oddsmakers at online sports gambling giant Sportsbook.com have installed the Suns a slight 3 1/2 point favorite with a 222 1/2 total. Start time is set for 9 p.m. ET and can be seen on ESPN.
“I just want to go out, have fun, get used to the guys and just win,” O’Neil said following Tuesday’s Suns practice. “I’m not looking to put up historic numbers. Whatever these guys ask of me, that’s what I’m going to do.”
Suns all-star scoring guard Steve Nash is thrilled in the trade that brought O’Neil from Miami for Shawn Marion and Marcus Banks.
"We're going to have to adjust slightly to his strengths," Nash said, "but you know where he's strong we've been weak, and that's having a big presence in the paint, taking up space and guarding the rim."
The 14-time all-star has been sidelined since Jan. 21 due to a hip injury. While getting a start, don’t look for Shaq to log too much playing time. He is expected to play limited minutes.
The Lakers have also improved themselves via a trade when they picked up Pau Gasol from the Memphis Grizzlies back on Feb.5. Since Gasol’s arrival, the Lakers have improved to 6-1.
Gasol and Kobe Bryant scored 23 points apiece Tuesday night leading the Lakers to their fifth straight victory against the Atlanta Hawks 122-93.
