Chicago Bulls vs San Antonio Spurs 2012 NBA Picks

by Scott Burgess on Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

The red hot San Antonio Spurs host the Chicago Bulls tonight, Wednesday Feb 29th, as the Spurs return home after a grueling nine game road trip. These two teams split two meetings last year, with San Antonio winning by nine at home and the Bulls by 10 in the Windy City. NBA oddsmakers have the Spurs as slim -1.5 point home favorites over the Bulls with the over/under set at 193 points. Chicago (28-8, 14-6 V) beat the New Orleans Hornets 99-95 on Tuesday. It was Derrick Rose to the rescue for the Bulls in a sluggish first game back from the All-Star break. Rose finished with 32 points, six in the finishing run. Noah had 15 points and 16 rebounds for the Bulls and Carlos Boozer and Luol Deng added 14 points apiece.

The Bulls are deep in big men, Joakim Noah is playing at an all-star level (12.6 points, 11.9 rebounds in past eight games) and Chicago is No. 2 in the NBA in rebounding. By comparison, San Antonio is just 24th. Clearly the matchup to watch here is Rose against Parker, perhaps the two fastest players in the NBA. Parker deserves some MVP consideration. His points per game are up nearly seven points in February from last month to 24.6. Overall he’s averaging a team-leading 19.4 points and career-high 8.1 rebounds per game.

San Antonio (24-10, 13-1 H) won 114-99 at Denver last Thursday. DeJuan Blair has scored 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting to lead the Spurs, while Danny Green has tallied 11 and Matt Bonner added nine. The Spurs have dealt out 19 assists, committed only two turnovers and are hitting 50 percent from 3-point range after sinking nine of their first 18 shots from behind the arc. San Antonio has transformed from a defensive force to an offensive power, fourth in the NBA in scoring and fifth in field-goal shooting. Not that many have noticed. San Antonio concluded its annual Rodeo Road Trip 8-1. The Spurs had a chance to become the first team ever to sweep a road trip of more than seven games.

San Antonio has seen its second-best player, Manu Ginobili, play only nine games so far. Ginobili will probably miss this week as well with a strained left oblique. San Antonio is 17-8 without him. Also likely out another week is backup center Tiago Splitter (calf). That leaves San Antonio severely shorthanded up front other than Duncan (whose minutes are very limited) and DeJuan Blair, who dominated the injury-wracked Nuggets last Thursday with a career-high 28 points and 12 boards.
