If there is one thing the Denver Nuggets don’t need right now is a distraction; especially when battling Golden State for the eighth playoff spot in the NBA Western Conference, however, that’s what they might be getting due to the arrest of All-Star guard Carmelo Anthony Monday morning in Denver on suspicion of driving under the influence (DUI). Fortunately for the Nuggets, they can back into a playoff spot Monday night if the Phoenix Suns can defeat Golden State on the road.

This new legal issue facing Carmelo Anthony isn’t expected to be much of a distraction, but if the team doesn’t make the playoffs fingers could be pointed his way. The Nuggets next will play Memphis Wednesday at the Pepsi Center. 

“I don’t expect Carmelo Anthony’s arrest to affect the team in any way,” said Point-Spreads.com handicapper Reno Gold. “It’s not like he has suffered an injury. And he isn’t in college where he would be facing an immediate suspension. This is a personal thing for him and shouldn’t affect the team.” 

Nuggets officials refused to comment on the situation other than they are aware of it. According to ESPN news services, Anthony was traveling on I-25 around 4 a.m. when he was pulled over and taken into custody. Anthony was driving a silver Mercedes Benz and was stopped for failing to drive in a single lane and failing to dim lights. Anthony submitted to a blood-test but results will not be available for at least 10 days. Anthony was released on bond on Monday morning on his own recognisance. A summons appearance was scheduled for May 14.
