The San Antonio Spurs look to put the Utah Jazz in quite a hole tonight, Wednesday May 2nd, when the two teams battle in Game 2 of the Western Conference quarterfinals in the Alamo City. The Spurs pounded the Jazz 106-91 in Game 1. NBA oddsmakers have the Spurs as huge -11.5 point home favorites over the Jazz with the over/under set at 203.5 points. Utah’s Paul Millsap had 20 points and nine rebounds in Game 1 for the Jazz. Gordon Hayward had 17 points and Al Jefferson ended with 16 points and nine boards for Utah , which has won just twice at San Antonio since May 2, 1999.
Forward Josh Howard is expected to remain in the starting lineup even after going scoreless in 16 minutes during Game 1. Howard, of course, just returned from knee surgery last week.
The Jazz have to improve its pick-and-roll defense and better contain Spurs point guard Tony Parker. Jazz assistant Sidney Lowe said, “The main thing is, we’ve got to keep him in front. Fight, fight, keep him in front. He’s so good with the basketball; we have to keep him in front of us. [In the paint] it’s a danger zone. He’s so good there. And what makes him so good is, he can get in there and finish and get the shot off over big guys. He went to the foul line 10 times [in Game 1]. We can’t allow that. We just have to be more — we have to be better communicating, and then we have to a little more aggressive on the ball and just try to keep him in front of us and make him beat us over the top.”
San Antonio’s Tony Parker netted 28 points and dished out eight assists, leading San Antonio to the resounding Game 1 win. Tim Duncan tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds, his 128th postseason double- double good for fifth all-time, for the Spurs, who have won 11 games in a row dating back to the regular season since an April 11 defeat to the Lakers. Veteran Stephen Jackson chipped in with 14 points and 4 rebounds off the bench to lead the Spurs’ reserves. San Antonio’s bench, which ranked first in the NBA in scoring at 41.9 points per game during the regular season, outscored its Jazz counterparts 44-31.
On the injury front, Spurs backup big man Tiago Splitter is doubtful for Game 2 after suffering a sprained left wrist in the opener. Pitt product DeJuan Blair, who was a starter before Boris Diaw took his job last month, will likely replace Splitter in the rotation.
The Bottom Line: The Spurs are that good, but by 11.5, I don’t think so. The Jazz will rebound and cover. Want to dominate the books this season with some of the best NBA Picks Experts in the business? Then sign up right now and get NBA Picks Free!
