Memphis (1-2) face a 2-1 series deficit in their Western Conference first-round playoff duel with the Los Angeles Clippers as Game 4 looms tonight in Staples Center. The Griz suffered a pair of one-point losses mainly because of being outworked down the stretch of those games. The Clippers have executed better with the game on the line because they have proven to be the more mentally tough team.

Rudy Gay said there were no secrets to why the Grizzlies have lost twice in this series, including the opener when they blew a 27-point lead at home. “I think we know what we can be,” he said Saturday. “The first game we got away from how we played basketball. When we play our way, I feel as though we are a better team.”

Every team needs a clear identity when a game gets tight and the Grizzlies seem confused as to theirs. Last year in the playoffs, they were built around the low-post excellence of Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. This year in the playoffs, they are built around what? Gasol has just 1 shot attempt in three fourth quarters. Randolph has 6. By contrast, the three perimeter players — Gay, O.J. Mayo and Conley — have 13, 13 and 7, respectively.

LA (2-1) beat the Grizzlies 87-86 at home on Saturday night. Chris Paul, who had 24 points and 11 assists, was the only Clippers player to do well at the line. He made seven of eight, including two with 23 seconds left for the six-point lead. The Clippers missed 17 of 30 free throws and almost squandered a six-point lead in the final 23 seconds. The Clippers took six more free throws, missing the last five.

“The bottom line is you’ve got to make the free throws,” he said. “We’ve struggled with that periodically throughout the season. We were able to overcome it but you have to be very good in a lot of other areas when you miss that many free throws.

The Bottom Line: The Clippers have to continue do what they’re doing, and shut down the Grizzlies in the fourth.  Want to dominate the books this season with some of the best NBA Picks Experts in the business? Then sign up right now and get NBA Picks Free!
