Boston (6-3, 2-2 V) rolled over the 76ers, 107-91, in the pivotal Game 3 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series on Wednesday. Kevin Garnett, Rajon Rondo and Paul Pierce all recorded double-doubles by the time the fourth quarter began. Garnett finished with 27 points and 13 rebounds, Rondo added 23 points and 14 assists and Pierce put up 24 points and 12 boards despite dealing with an ailing left knee.
Sixers coach Doug Collins noted after Game 3 that Boston has no doubt noticed what is happening in the other Eastern Conference semifinal – how Miami, minus Chris Bosh, is getting all it can handle from Indiana. The Celtics smell blood in the water, sense an opportunity to make this an unexpectedly great season. Given their age, it might be their last chance to do so with this group.
Clearly it would be a mistake to let the 76ers nurture any thought they could come back into this series. Not that they’re out of it now, but the Celtics have to know that if they come out hard tonight and get a lead — then weather the Philly flurry that is sure to follow — then there will be a glowing opportunity to end this conference semifinal on Monday at the Garden.
Philadelphia’s (5-4, 3-1 H) Thaddeus Young had a team-high 22 points off the bench for Sixers, whose starters combined for 36 points on dismal 30 percent (12-of-40) shooting. Lou Williams and Jodie Meeks each added 13 points for Philly.
Stopping Garnett is mission No. 1 if the Sixers plan to make this a series again. “You have to do a better job early,” Collins said. “You can’t let him get such deep position. You can’t let him run underneath the rim, turn and face the basket. You have to meet him at the free throw line.”
The Bottom Line: The Celtics can do the same tonight like they did in game 3. Want to dominate the books this season with some of the best NBA Picks Experts in the business? Then sign up right now and get NBA Picks Free!
