The Oklahoma City Thunder look to tie the NBA Finals at two games apiece tonight, Tuesday June 19th, as they take on the Miami Heat for Game 4 in sunny Miami. The Heat lost to Dallas in the 2011 Finals after taking a 2-1 advantage, while OKC eliminated the Spurs after going down 0-2 in the 2012 Western Conference Finals. NBA oddsmakers have the Heat as -3.5 point home favorites over the Thunder with the over/under set at 192.5 points. OKC’s (13-5, 4-4 V) Kevin Durant had 25 points to pace the Thunder. Russell Westbrook scored 19 and pulled his team within one in the closing minutes, but later missed a potential game-tying three-pointer.
The Heat outscored the Thunder 31-15 from the free throw line and relied on that production when their offense stalled in the third. They managed just four field goals in the quarter, but went 13-for-14 from the charity stripe. “We fouled too many times,” said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. “We’ve got to do a better job defending them without fouling.”
“We were down 2-0 against San Antonio (in the West finals) and everybody thought the series was over,” Brooks said. “But I know our guys, they’re very competitive, they’re very resilient. They’ve always showed that type of effort every game, and we’ve always been a great bounce-back team.”
Miami (14-7, 9-2 H) overcame a 10-point third-quarter deficit to earn a 91-85 win in Game 3. LeBron James finished with 29 points and 14 rebounds, Dwyane Wade scored 25 and Chris Bosh had 10 and 11 rebounds. As a team, Miami shot just 37.8 percent from the field.
James Harden is pulling a vanishing act. The reigning Sixth Man of the Year has sputtered out of gate in his first trip to the Finals, and it’s a leading reason why the Thunder is trailing the Heat 2-1 entering tonight’s Game 4. Harden entered this championship series averaging 17.6 points in the postseason. He had connected on 45.2 percent of his field-goal attempts.
Against the Heat, Harden has averaged 11.7 points on 40.7 percent shooting. He has registered as many fouls (11) as he has assists. “He’s their most efficient player when you let him get to his whole package,” said Battier. “We just have to keep making him work. Keep him off the foul line and try to keep running him off the 3-point line.”
The Bottom Line: OKC had the lead and let it slip away, but tonight they’ll hold the line. Want to dominate the books this season with some of the best NBA Picks Experts in the business? Then sign up right now and get NBA Picks Free!
