Jermain Taylor confident for rematch with Kelly Pavlik for middle-weight beltConfidence was pouring from former middle-weight boxing champ Jermain Taylor’s lips as he participated in a nation wide conference call from Las Vegas on Thursday (Feb 7) to multitudes of reporters. Taylor lost his title to challenger Kelly Pavlik on Sept. 29 in a fight where he admits he underestimated the competition.

“It took a butt-kicking to get back on track,” Taylor said. “But I’m back on track and there ain’t no one that can beat me when I’m at the top of my game; nobody.”

Taylor (27-1-1, 17 KO’s ) is an underdog to Pavlik (32-0, 29 KO’s ) for the Feb 16 rematch from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas but only slight according to oddsmakers (Bodoglife.com)   installing the former champ with +150 odds while the price of a Pavlik SU win opened at -180.

Taylor acknowledges there is some good in getting knocked off his perch by Pavlik the first time around.

“It’s a shame to say it, but yes,” Taylor said. “It’s a shame because I know what it took to get here, and I know what it took in my life and I know hard work. But, yes, this was a wake-up call. It’s a shame it took a butt-kicking in order for me to realize it, but if that’s what it took, then that’s what it took.”

“I know I’m in tip-top shape now,” Taylor said. “I know I can go 12 rounds easy. In the last fight, I didn’t know I could go 12 rounds. It was because I never went 12 rounds.

There’s nothing like knowing you are in shape to do whatever you want to do.” Taylor said he blames himself for the loss to Pavlik but has been able to find something positive from the experience.

“Because right now I feel like I’m at the top of my game. I’m in shape. I’m going 12 rounds with no problem. I can do whatever I want to do in the ring.”

Bodoglife.com is now taking OVER/UNDER bets on the posted round total of 10 ½.
