In what must be considered fight of the year, Kelly Pavlik KO'd undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor in the seventh round to become the new champ. Taylor came out blazing in the early rounds, pasting Kelly with an array of powershots to the head. In the second round Jermain blasted Pavlik to the canvas with a wild three punch combination that had Pavlik hanging on for dear life. Pavlik somehow managed to survive the round and come back strongly in round three.

Jermain seemed to have punched himself out a bit by trying so hard to KO Pavlik and seemed to start fading. Pavlik started coming on in round six and had Taylor backpedaling and eating leather. In round seven Jermain looked winded and Kelly took advantage by drilling Taylor with a rapier like right hand that hurtthe Arkansas native badly. The former champ was wobbling  and Kelly finish him off in spectacular fashion with a right uppercut, left hook combo that crumpled Taylor in a corner when referee Steve Smoger waved off the contest at 2:14 of the seventh round.
