Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, New Jersey will be the scene tonight for Arturo Gatti vs. Alfonso Gomez. The big question on everyone’s mind is whether there is enough thunder still left in Arturo Gatti, 40-8, 31 KO’s, to hold off top 30 Welterweight contender Gomez?
BetUS.com has listed in the fight. If Gatti were a car though, his odometer would be clicking somewhere in the 300,000 mile range now. After a one-year layoff Arturo has handpicked Mexican Alfonso Gomez for his comeback after taking a beating in his last fight to then Welterweight Champ Carlos “Tata” Baldomir.
Alfonso likes to apply pressure enforced by a piercing body-attack with both fists. Gomez has a stiff jab, quick hands and a big heart. For Gomez however, this will be his first ever scheduled 10 round fight having never gone past 8 rounds.
Gatti for all his vulnerability with bleeding skin, fragile hands and ring age, has a wealth of experience to his advantage here. Former arch rival “Irish” Mickey Ward will be working his corner for this fight in hopes of jumpstarting Arturo’s career once more. “Thunder” Gatti can still bring the heat with lead packed in both hands. Heart, determination, a solid chin and decent boxing ability has made Arturo plenty of cash.
I anticipate this to be a close and wildly entertaining fight. Expect to see blood, knockdowns and a Gatti victory in the end. If Arturo looks good at the weigh-in, Point-Spreads.com suggests you wager before all of the Gatti fans break the vault and push Gatti’s price to -250 at the books, take Gatti early at –185 odds while you can.
Boxing prediction: Arturo Gatti for 1 unit at –185
