Edison Miranda proved he was back as a legit contender with a 5th round knockout win over Henry Porras. BetUS.com had Edison Miranda as a -1100 favorite.
Porras was on the defensive most of the time with a decent shell styled defense occasionally trying to rally with some angry counters. Miranda was being aggressive with caution in the first two rounds methodically throwing two-punch combinations to the head and body. In the third round Miranda started turning up the heat with a jackhammer left jab that was snapping Porras’s head back with regularity.
Soon Miranda’s right hands were ricocheting off Porras’s head after the jab and the Costa Rican was slowly deteriorating. Porras would do good work when he seldomly got inside but his lack of a jab hurt him badly in this fight.
In the 5th round Miranda landed some bombs that had Porras reeling in the corner. Miranda is a terrifically strong right hand puncher and when Porras went defensive, Miranda started going right hand crazy unloading full leverage blasts off of Porras’s skull until the referee intervened at 2:45 of the 5th round. Point-Spreads expert Boxing handicapper Brad Marchetti of EinsteinPicks had predicted the fight would go under the 8.5 round Over\Under line posted by BetUS.com and he made his customers some nice scratch.
Marchetti had this to say: “Miranda is better now at 168 Lbs. than he was at 160 when he got waxed by Kelly Pavlik. Miranda has improved his overall boxing ability and he is a more patient fighter now than he was in the beginning. Miranda vs Jermain Taylor would be a good bout at 168 but I would have to give the slight edge to Taylor, Maybe at 7-5 odds.”
