A brawl could be in the works between two top 30 Welterweight contenders on ESPN2's Wednesday night fights from the Kodak Theater in Los Angeles, CA. Reality TV star Cornelius ”K-9" Bundrage takes on Colombian Joel Julio in a 10 round Welterweight bout. BetUS.com has Joel Julio -220 odds to beat Cornelius Bundrage who is +170 in the bout.
Cornelius Bundrage, 26-2, 15 KO’s has been a very popular fighter since his worldwide exposure from the TV show “The Contender” and has a 3 fight winning streak heading into his fight with Joel Julio. Julio, 31-1, 29 KO’s, is riding a 4 fight winning streak and has looked impressive in recent bouts having stopped veteran Mauro Lucero, 42-11-1, 28 KO’s, in one round in his last outing less than 2 months ago.
Both of these guys are punchers so a knockout could be in the works. Bundrage is very short for a Welterweight at 5'6". He is heavily muscled and possesses right hand power but the 34 year old Bundrage’s boxing ability is a liability. He is a mechanical fighter who has bad defense along with a suspect chin. Having had only 2 amateur fights Corneluis Bundrage also has little ring generalship. It’s a real surprise that Cornelius has gone as far as he has in his career.
I think the end of Bundrage’s run will come crashing down against a young gun like the 22 year old Joel Julio. Julio can bomb with both hands and has been polishing his boxing skills under the tutelage of all-time great boxer Pernell “Sweet Pea” Whitaker. At 5'10" Julio is much taller, far more technically sound and has faster hands than Bundrage.
Brad Marchetti Boxing Prediction: Joel Julio for 5 units
