Mike Oliver gives boxing lesson to Cruz CarvajalIn what was expected to be a closely contested I.B.F Title eliminator between two top 20 Jr. Featherweights, turned into a mismatch as 2-1 odds on favorite Mike Oliver gave Mexican Cruz Carvajal a boxing lesson. Final scores read 118-110 twice and 118-111 all for Mike Oliver.

"Oliver has twice the speed of Carvajal," stated Point-Spreads.com Senior Boxing Expert Brad Marchetti.  "Oliver has super skills and is boxing on his home turf in Boston and should be able to outland Carvajal to score a decision victory." The money moved accordingly as Sportsbook.com moved the odds on Oliver from -200 this morning to -280 by fight time.

From the opening bell Oliver used his handspeed to dictate the pace by throwing rapid fire cominations to both the head and body of Carvajal. Cruz, who chases armadillos and eats them as part of his training regime (Boxers are truly crazy) plodded forward throughout trying to time Oliver with uppercuts but found little success in finding his elusive target. As Carvajal lunged forward, Oliver countered with flush left hands that stopped his foe in his tracks.

Mike has great versatility being effective on the inside with body shots utilizing smart clinches to set up his lightning quick combinations on the move behind a busy Jab. Carvajal had some moments in the middle rounds as he landed some decent leather but Oliver absorbed the punches well displaying a solid set of whiskers. In the late rounds Oliver showed excellent stamina as Carvajal was frustrated, tired and unable to go for broke like he needed too.

"Mike had too much of everything. He showed great ring generalship handling the old pro like that. He came prepared and proved that he is a legit top 15 contender at 122." concluded Marchetti.

Mike Oliver has been boxing since the age of two years old and it showed as he outsmarted and outboxed Cruz with ease all night long. Impressive as his performance was, Oliver still has plenty of upside to get better. Mike will probably never be a huge puncher but at times he needs to sit down on his punches a little more and slap less. Punch stat numbers read: Mike Oliver landed 359 of 1056 punches. Cruz Carvajal landed 310 of 816 punches.
