Oscar de la Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. Prediction

by Thomas Jensen on Thursday, April 26th, 2007

Oscar de la Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. PredictionMay 5th is when the gloves go on and Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Oscar De La Hoya throw down. If you’re not one of the few lucky ones who will be witnessing the fight live, you’ll be watching it on HBO pay-per-view on your own personal big screen or at your favorite sports bar. You’ll also, no doubt, have your bets ready to go for the big fight. We’re here to make sure you’re not betting with a blind fold on. Jimmy Boyd’s De La Hoya Mayweather predictions will help steer you in the right direction.

BetUS.com currently lists Floyd Mayweather Jr. as a -125 favorite against The Golden Boy who is a +700 dog. As much fun as it would be to nail the winner in one of the biggest boxing bouts in history, the round total actually shows better value and that’s where we will lean with our De La Hoya Mayweather predictions.

BetUS.com currently lists the total rounds number at 11.5. This means you are wagering on whether you think the fight will go over one minute and 30 seconds into the twelfth round. We recommend playing the over in this bout and here’s why.

Although De La Hoya is expected to receive $25 million for this fight, $15 million more than Mayweather, I still see a lot of motivation for the Golden Boy to stick it out into late rounds. De La Hoya may have turned business man, but he realizes that it was his glove work that got him there. His quiet confidence holds a strong ego that tells me he loves being the face of the sport. He’s not about to give that up so easily to boxing’s current punisher.

A falling out with Mayweather Sr. gives De La Hoya added motivation as well. It was reported that Mayweather Sr., De La Hoya’s long time corner man, wanted $2 million dollars for the fight and De La Hoya only wanted to offer him $500,000 up front and another $500,000 if he kept his title belt. This relationship ended and Mayweather Sr. will now be in his son’s corner supposedly patching things up with him. De La Hoya will want to hang around as long as possible for the chance to see if the judges will grant him the victory over both Mayweather’s.

Mayweather may be 37-0 with 24 knockouts, but I don’t foresee any knockouts here as both fighters will be careful not to make any mistakes to get caught. Both fighters know the implications of this fight in terms of where it ranks in boxing’s pantheon. The winner will be decided by the judges, but I feel we can collect a nice paycheck by betting that this thing goes the distance.
