The British Columbia Lions are slight favorites at +150 over the Calgary Stampeders at +165 to win the CFL Western Division. The odds are slim that either the Saskatchewan Roughriders (+450) or Edmonton Eskimos (+550) have much of a chance in winning the West. The Lions have 36 of the 42 players who played on last year's Grey Cup team back....The only time the Lions reached back-to-back Grey Cups was 1963-64.The Lions have played in the last three West finals and five of the last eight. Calgary Stampeders (+165) : Quarterback Henry Burris is not guaranteed a starting job when the season kicks but will more than likely be under center to begin the season. Burris finished 2006 on a sour note by throwing four interceptions and turned the ball over on a fumble in the conference semifinal playoffs. Stampeders head coach Tom Higgins wants to get a good look at Akili Smith.
Edmonton Eskimos (+550) : Not given much of a chance to win the Western Division, the Eskimos will be going for broke with a new offense installed by co-offensive coordinator Jacques Chapdelaine. The Eskimo’s plan is to move the ball using the NFL’s West Coast style. They aren’t calling the offense the West Coast but from descriptions that is what it seems to simulate. The plan is for quarterback Ricky Ray to distribute the ball (dink and dunk) and get everybody involved. The offensive plan should make the offense less predictable and more difficult for opposing defenses to read. |
