No. 25 Kentucky will battle SEC leader Florida tonight as it looks to gain a share of first place in the conference standings. This evening’s meeting between the Wildcats and Gators is scheduled to tip off at 7:00pm ET at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center in Gainesville; the game will be broadcast live on ESPN. NCAAB Point Spreads have Florida listed as a -9.5 against the spread home favorite and the Over/Under set at 135 points.
No. 7 Florida had a 10 game winning snapped last Tuesday in Arkansas as the Razorbacks pulled off an 80-69 upset. The loss was just the third of the season for the Gators and their first to an SEC opponent.
Billy Donovan’s troops did not spend any time sulking, though, and they quickly put the loss in the rearview mirror with an 83-58 destruction of last place Mississippi State on Saturday in Gainesville. The win over the Bulldogs improved Florida’s record to 19-3 overall and it preserved its one game lead over tonight’s opponent, Kentucky, in the conference standings. It also kept the Gators home record perfect as they are now 11-0 at the Stephen C. O’Connell Center.
Florida could receive its most significant home test of the season this evening, though. The 25th ranked Wildcats, which are 8-2 in SEC play, won their fifth straight game over the weekend, topping Auburn 72-62 in Lexington.
Kentucky’s streak also saw the team knock out LSU and South Carolina at Rupp Arena, but it featured back to back road wins at Mississippi and Texas A&M as well. The Wildcats beat the then No. 16 Rebels 87-74 and they avenged their first conference loss, an 83-71 setback against the Aggies, by wiping out A&M 72-68 in overtime at Reed Arena in College Station.
By all accounts Florida is still the better team, particularly at the O’Connell Center where it has defeated its opposition by an average of 26 points per game. Kentucky may have enough confidence right now to at least hang with the Gators, though. And John Calipari will only help bolster their belief as he has guided Kentucky to five straight wins over Florida. The Wildcats are also 2-0 in their last two trips to Gainesville, beating the Gators 74-59 and 70-54.
