The 14th ranked Kansas Jayhawks will look to keep their Big 12 lead tonight when they face a scuffling Texas Longhorns squad at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence. This evening’s showdown between Kansas and Texas is scheduled to tip off at 9:00pm ET on ESPN. College Basketball Point Spreads are favoring the hosting Jayhawks at -13.5 against the spread; the game total is set at 132 points.
The Jayhawks steamrolled their way to 7-0 start in Big 12 play, but, for whatever the reason, the wheels came off for Bill Self’s troops in a stunning 85-80 home loss to Oklahoma State on February 2nd. The setback, which ended a 33-game home winning streak for Kansas, proved difficult to overcome as the Jayhawks suffered a far more humiliating loss their next time out.
Kansas fell 62-55 at TCU on the 6th, giving the woeful Horned Frogs their first conference win of the season. The Jayhawks shot just 29.5 percent from the field and 13.6 percent from beyond the arc in losing to TCU. Kansas run through the ditch did not end in Fort Worth, though. The team lost an unthinkable third straight contest last Saturday at Oklahoma (72-66) to give its in-state rival Kansas State sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
Kansas would have an opportunity to end its trouble and regain the top spot in the Big 12 standings on Monday when it squared off against the Wildcats at Allen Fieldhouse. The Jayhawks made good on their chance in a big way as they smashed K-State 83-62.
With Kansas regaining its bearings, it would seem the Longhorns, an 0-7 road team, could be in big trouble this evening. Texas, which is 11-13 overall, earned just its third league win of the season on Wednesday when it upset Iowa State 89-86 in overtime. The game marked the return of point guard Myck Kabongo, who wasted no time making his presence felt. The sophomore finished the game with 13 points, seven assists, and four rebounds.
Despite Kabongo’s return to the lineup, the Longhorns will have difficulty staying with Kansas. The Jayhawks have won four in a row and seven of eight against Texas and they are 4-1 against the spread this season following a 20-plus point victory.
