Michigan State will attempt to make the Big 10 a two horse race tonight when they face Purdue in West LaFayette, Indiana. The Spartans have a two game lead over the Boilermakers going into this evening's battle. A Michigan State victory would likely reduce the fight for the conference's top spot to the Spartans and the Fighting Illini. The game is scheduled to get under way at 7:00pm ET at the Mackey Arena and will be televised on ESPN.
Michigan State vs Purdue College Basketball Picks at Sportsbook.com have the Boilermakers listed as a -2.5 against the spread home favorite.
The Spartans, who currently have a one and a half game lead over Illinois in the Big 10 standings, are looking to garner their first conference title since 2001 and extend their three game winning streak.
Michigan State is 10-2 in conference action and 20-4 overall after decimating Big 10 foes Minnesota, Indiana, and Michigan.
The sixth ranked Spartans most recently beat the Wolverines 54-42 on February 10th at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. Their defense held Michigan to 16-of-46 from the field and 4-of-24 from three point range. The intimidation apparantly even carried over to the charity stripe as the Wolverines hit just 54.5 percent of their free throw attempts.
Freshman forward Delvon Roe led Michigan State with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Sophomore guard Kalin Lucas added his customary 15 points.
Tom Izzo's team has been excellent on the road this year, going 7-0 and winning by an average of 11 points per game away from East Lansing. They average 70.6 points per game in opposing arenas while limiting host teams to a meager 60.5.
Nineteenth ranked Purdue has rebounded from back-to-back losses by earning wins over Penn State and Iowa. The two victories moved the Boliermakers conference record to 8-4 and their overall tally to 19-6.
Matt Painter's squad overcame the Hawkeyes in Iowa City by a score of 49-45. Their stifling brand of defense frustrated Iowa into 36.2 percent field goal shooting and 10.5 percent from beyond the arc. Not surprisingly, the Hawkeyes only connected on five assists in the losing effort. Purdue guard E'Twaun Moore led his team with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Given the quality defensive play that characterizes both of these schools, this evening's game should be a tightly contested low scoring affair. The Boilermakers, who are 13-2 at Mackey Arena, are averaging 71.9 points per game at home and holding visitors to a ridiculous 54 per outing.
Michigan State Spartans +2.5 (-110)
Purdue Boilermakers -2.5 (-110)
