College Basketball Picks: Georgia Bulldogs vs Kentucky Wildcats

by Alexander Banks on Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

The Georgia Bulldogs hope to right the ship tonight in College Basketball Picks as they travel to take on SEC Conference rival Kentucky Wildcats.  The Bulldogs came into this season looking to finally make it to the NCAA Tourney, something they haven’t yet done under Coach Dennis Felton with a program damaged with NCAA sanctions from the Jim Harrick days.  However, it doesn’t look like that is going to happen this season as they are only 12-11 SU overall including only 3-7 SU in conference play.  The Bulldogs have lost 3 of the last four meetings between these clubs including earlier this month when they hosted the Wild Cats as a small favorite.  The Georgia offense has been horrible on the road as they are averaging only 61 points per game shooting a horrible 37% from the floor.  Their defense hasn’t helped to counter the lack of scoring as they give up an average of 70 points per game.  The season is just about over for the Bulldogs as an NCAA Tournament birth is gone and the line reflects that fact as Georgia is listed as a +6 point road underdog at Bodog.com.

The Kentucky Wildcats looked to pick up the excitement within their basketball program and did that when they hired fist year coach Billy Gillispie.  Gillispie could be the choice in the long term as he was able to turn around programs at Texas A&M and UTEP.  It didn’t start off all that well early on this season but it looks like the Wildcats have might have found themselves as they have won 8 of their last 10 to improve their record to 13-10 SU overall including an impressive 7-3 SU mark in the tough SEC.  After being known as a team that just runs and scores they have turned things around by putting a tough defense on the court.  In fact, the Wildcats are giving up only 62 points per game on their home floor while allowing their opponents to shoot only 37% from the floor.  They have also been effective defending the three point shot as their opponents have only shot 30% from beyond the arc. It might still be a while before the Bulldogs reach the “Big Dance” but in the near term they should haven’t been a good team to back as a dog as they are a paltry 5-14 ATS as an underdog over the last 2 seasons.  However, in this rivalry Georgia has been able to hold their own as they are 6-4 ATS when playing at Kentucky since 1997.
