No. 5 Michigan State’s quest for a No. 1 seed and sole possession of the Big Ten title continues tonight as it squares off against conference rival Indiana in Bloomington. The Spartans and Hoosiers are scheduled for a 7:00pm ET tip at Assembly Hall; the game will be broadcast live on ESPN. NCAAB Picks have the visiting Spartans listed as a -2.5 against the spread favorite and the Over/Under set at 138.5 points.
Michigan State’s conference season hit a rough patch in mid-January after the team suffered back-to-back road losses to Northwestern and Michigan. Since those two setbacks, however, the Spartans have been almost flawless, losing only in Champaign.
Tom Izzo’s squad has been exceptional during the month of February, putting together a 7-0 run that will garner it at least a share of the Big Ten regular season title. The Spartans have defeated three ranked teams in their march to a potential NCAA Tournament one seed and the road, which seemed to be their major bugaboo last month, has yielded three victories.
All of those things, in addition to the 80-65 beating Michigan State put on Indiana in late December, would seemingly point toward this evening being a rough one for the Hoosiers. However, Tom Crean’s troops are playing quality basketball as well right now.
Indiana, now 22-7 overall and 9-7 in conference play, has won five of its last six games, beating Purdue, Illinois, Northwestern, North Carolina Central, and Minnesota. The Hoosiers are also 16-1 at home where they own wins over Kentucky, Ohio State, and Michigan. Indiana’s lone Assembly Hall loss came in early January when it was upset by the Golden Gophers 77-74.
Michigan State has won six in a row in this series, including the last two meetings between the two schools in Bloomington; however, it has been quite some time since the Spartans faced a respectable Indiana squad. This year’s Hoosiers are not just respectable, they are good, and getting a win against them tonight will be a major challenge.
