The Mustangs were able to break a 5 game College Basketball Picks losing streak on Saturday when they beat won 99-96 over UTEP in double-overtime. The win left the Mustangs at 9-18 SU overall and only 3-11 SU in Conference matchups. Senior Jon Killen went 7 for 11 from beyond the arc and finished with a career high 33 points for the Mustangs. Killen is SMU’s leading scorer at 13.1 points per game. In the first match up versus the Tigers he had 12 points but SMU was held to only 32.1% shooting from the field. SMU will also have to tighten up their defense as they already give up an average of 71.3 points per game. The Mustangs will hope to keep this one close and let it come down to free throw shooting as they out performance the horrible Tiger performance by a 72.8% to 58.3% margin. There might not be a whole lot of hope for the Mustang backers from an outright win but an interesting note is that underdogs of 20 or more points going into a College Basketball Picks contest after having lost 3 of their last 4 games against opponent after having won 3 of their last 4 games is 52-21 ATS (72%) over the last five seasons. However, before you run to the bank with that fact SMU won’t install much confidence as they are only 8-24 ATS in home games off a home win since 1997.
