College Basketball Picks: Memphis Tigers vs SMU Mustangs PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 05 March 2008

After losing for the first time the Memphis Tigers look to remain unbeaten in C-USA College Basketball Picks when they take on the SMU Mustangs tonight.  The second-ranked Tigers are looking to move within one win of a second consecutive perfect regular season in Conference Play.  Memphis sits at 28-1 SU overall including a 14-0 SU mark in C-USA.  The Tigers are coming off a surprisingly tough 76-67 victory at Southern Mississippi on Saturday where they allowed the Golden Eagles to shoot over 54% from the floor.  The win stretched their Conference winning streak to 37 games. The Tigers have won two in a row since losing their No. 1 ranking to then No. 2 Tennessee.  The Tigers have owned SMU winning their last six contests in a row the most recent a 77-48 victory as a 32 point favorite.  Although the odds makers don’t have them listed as such a large favorite as in their first meeting the Tigers are still a huge -22 point road favorite at BookMaker.com

The Mustangs were able to break a 5 game College Basketball Picks losing streak on Saturday when they beat won 99-96 over UTEP in double-overtime.  The win left the Mustangs at 9-18 SU overall and only 3-11 SU in Conference matchups. Senior Jon Killen went 7 for 11 from beyond the arc and finished with a career high 33 points for the Mustangs. Killen is SMU’s leading scorer at 13.1 points per game.  In the first match up versus the Tigers he had 12 points but SMU was held to only 32.1% shooting from the field.  SMU will also have to tighten up their defense as they already give up an average of 71.3 points per game.  The Mustangs will hope to keep this one close and let it come down to free throw shooting as they out performance the horrible Tiger performance by a 72.8% to 58.3% margin.

There might not be a whole lot of hope for the Mustang backers from an outright win but an interesting note is that underdogs of 20 or more points going into a College Basketball Picks contest after having lost 3 of their last 4 games against opponent after having won 3 of their last 4 games is 52-21 ATS (72%) over the last five seasons.  However, before you run to the bank with that fact SMU won’t install much confidence as they are only 8-24 ATS in home games off a home win since 1997.
