louisville pitinoAccording to the latest March Madness Predictions 2013 at Sportsbook.ag No. 3 Indiana and No. 2 Duke are the favorites, at +450 and +500 odds respectively, to win the NCAA Tournament, but lurking just behind those two schools is fourth ranked Louisville. The Cardinals, an eight point NCAAB point spreads favorite in tonight’s Big East Tournament showdown with Notre Dame, are drawing +600 odds to win the school’s third national title.

Rick Pitino’s Louisville Cardinals were a preseason favorite to win the Big East and they partially fulfilled those expectations, finishing in a three-way tie for first with Georgetown and Marquette.

Nonetheless, at one point the Cardinals conference titles chances were in serious jeopardy. Following its 4-0 start to the conference season, Louisville suffered three consecutive losses, falling 68-70 to Syracuse, 64-73 to Villanova, and 51-53 to Georgetown. Pitino got his troops attention following the loss to Hoyas, though, as they rallied to win 11 of their next 12 games and finish the regular season on a seven game winning streak.

Louisville’s strong close to the season, which featured wins against Pittsburgh, Marquette, Syracuse, and Notre Dame, resulted in a 14-4 league record and a No. 2 seed in the Big East Tournament. The Cardinals also vaulted all the way to No. 4 in both the AP and Coaches Polls as a result of their late season prowess.

Louisville, which is currently projected to win the No. 1 seed in the South Region, led the Big East in scoring with a 73.6 point per game average and it ranked fourth and 14th nationally in field goal percentage and points per game allowed.
